I don’t know why, but lately I’ve had in my head the memory of going over to Uncle Greg and Mary’s for pizza… sitting somewhat cramped around the table – the Tallacksen clan, 6-strong, imposing on the relatively newlywed couple – eating homemade pizza, then going downstairs and playing with Uncle Greg’s latest toy… from the digital compact cassette to the CD-ROM game machine (was there a brand name? I don’t remember) with pinball. In retrospect, I wish we had spent more time just listening to music on his pretty decent sound system. Nonetheless, a good memory. And I think it’s safe to blame him at least in part for my love of electronic boxes with buttons and lights on them.

ha, here I am, commenting on my own post…

I should have read the entire wiki entry – the CD-rom was called CD-i, for CD Interactive.

Good memory indeed! Next time you’re out this way, feel free to stop by and re-live a few moments from your youth! The “pretty decent sound system” lives on (with much the same old music!), and the now antique Philips CD-i player still works!! (and was eventually even joined by two others, when they started selling for about 95%-off orig. prices on eBay. Cheaper than replacement parts, y’know…) Give us enough warning, and we might even be able to whip up a pizza.

Or if you’d rather see the *latest* “latest toy”, you could sample a video selection from the almost-new Blu-Ray player on our Panasonic plasma HDTV. (No idea how I did it, but I seem to have put my reputation as “The Dead Format King” in serious jeopardy by mistakenly choosing the winning Hi-Def DVD format. Who’da thunk?)

Thanks for remembering, and taking the time to share it. -U.G.

Yes, I’m glad Blu-Ray won… even though I haven’t had a TV in 5 years or so!

Feel free to stop by our place too – I’m happy to show off my meager system, and I make a pretty decent pizza as well!
