I’m completing (I say this because it takes a while to format a 750GB hard drive) installation of an additional drive in my media server.

new server drives

Very few will be able to appreciate the above pic, but so be it! I’m now just shy of 2TB of formatted disc space. Less then that if you discount what is used to provide backup/redundancy.

Those dang 12-megapixel images (jpeg and RAW) take up a lot of space!

Nearly 2TB, eh? I might say I feel a bit skimpy, being an IT guy, and all, but I’m going to spin it and instead comment how I much more efficiently use my space. Backups are (just barely) still fitting onto removable 160GB HDs which are rotated offsite. Digital camera is only a 6MP unit and doesn’t offer RAW pics. Yeah, yeah, more efficient.

Ooh, hold on, gotta go… there’s a 750GB drive on sale at Fry’s.com for $147. (my rule is to never pay more than $0.25 per GB and if you can get down toward $0.20, that’s even better)

The drive I got was from Frys, $130 because I got the PATA version – I’d prefer SATA, but my MOBO only has two SATA slots and I’m using them both. Hopefully this is the last PATA drive I’ll ever buy. They’re on the downslope, I figure, so this was a pretty good price. They’re already getting harder to find at decent prices. I did have to pull my CD drive from the server so I could power the additional HD – I’m all out of power!

My backup scheme is pretty extensive, though: one bootable (on an external firewire drive that’s not accounted for above) and one data backup of the main computer. Full backup of lossless music. Full backup of pics. Full backup of my ‘audio’ drive, which holds various music projects etc. I think that’s it!
