If I remember correctly, it’s been that many days since I owned a car. No, I haven’t been tallying the days one by one (long ago ran out of fingers and toes…). And I’m only a little better at doing date math then time math (oh, just change it to base-60 and calculate, they say! ha!). But thankfully, the web makes it easy. So as part of our plan of moving to the ‘burbs, Adrienne and I have purchased a car. A 2000 Honda CR-V EX, 65k miles, manual tranny, one-owner (who showed me all the receipts for oil changes, gave me the card of Luigi the service manager at the Honda dealership who knows the car, etc. etc.).

Of course, this will pretty much be a weekend-use car; public transportation will remain the prevailing method. But we think it’s got the right combo of size/utility, reliability, economy (it’s basically a tall Honda Civic) and value. Hope we’re proven correct on all accounts! And we like the boxier yet smaller styling of the 2000 model vs. newer ones (which only get bigger and curvier).

So, what do people reccommend for wax these days? I’ve got a weekend project…

Wax? Use Xymol, but not the stuff you’d find at your local auto store. Go for something a little better and order the Xymol Concours online. Be sure to pick up a bottle of pre-wax treatment too.

Yikes, $175 for 8oz???!!! I’m not sure I need “show-car” gloss and shine on a 9-year vehicle, just something to protect it and keep it looking nice. So, anything to recommend that might be a step better (if need be) than Turtle Wax or whatever, but not quite show-car-worthy?

Lu

What is this “wax” of which you speak?

Adrienne

Lula: That was my reaction, too! I don’t believe I’ve ever waxed a car…or owned a car that would need to be waxed.

David: I definitely don’t think $175 car wax is in the budget. I’d rather have you get yourself an iPod Touch!

David

Don’t think the Touch will be in the budget soon. But the car should be waxed. Relatively cheap protection for a car we intend to keep a while.

Adrienne

Waxing the car is fine with me. But I don’t think we need to spring for the luxury wax, since we don’t exactly have a luxury car. Though it’s certainly nice than anything I’ve had before!

Little D

Agree, you definitely need to wax your vehicle and wash weekly. Use two buckets. One wash bucket and then a rinse bucket. Dunk your sponges in the rinse bucket prior to going back to your soap bucket. Also make sure to wash your sponges and chamois in the washing machine after each wash so that the micro particles don’t scratch your car surfaces on the next wash and dry.

Lula: http://www.xymol.com to check of this great wax that we speak of. All natural components.

Little D

Oops…sorry. http://www.zymol.com for that last comment.

Adrienne

Wash and wax weekly?! I don’t know that I’ve ever washed a car more than twice a year. But as has been noted, this is a much nicer car than I’ve ever had to pleasure to own.

(Preemptive response to David: yes, I know it’s your name on the title…)

David

It’s as much mine as yours… that means you can pay for repairs as well!
