aside: classic New York moment

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I did some freelance ENG (Electonic News Gathering – i.e. recording sound for a news story) for NPR at a bookstore on the Upper West Side of NYC just now (listen for the story on Morning Edition Monday morning). At one point some young out of towners walked in out of the rain and asked the guy at the register, “excuse me, how do we get to the East Side?”. Guy at the register points east and says, “go that way.”

Good music tonight!

Allen Toussaint’s Bright Mississippi Band plays live at the Village Vanguard in 40 minutes. Give a listen if you can, it’s great music – I guarantee you’ll like it!

An addendum to my previous rant: Friday is Bike to Work Day. Will any of you participate? I may, though I’ll have to be stealthy…

aside: Why we need Audiophiles

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Why we need Audiophiles. Or at least, why we need people who care about music, and how it sounds.

aside: set your camera clock to DST!

A friendly reminder that your camera is likely not smart enough to know it is now Daylight Saving Time, so you probably need to manually go in and change it.

aside: Monkey GTD

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

One thing I’ve struggled with as I take on more and more at work is how to keep myself organized. Less organization leads to more stress and less productivity. But how to keep it all together, but not waste too much time keeping it together (because there’s stuff to be done!)? As you may know, I try to use a tiddlywiki to keep track of certain bits of information, but I’m going to try adding a GTD (Getting Things Done, after the book I have yet to read…) tiddlywiki to my workflow, and see if it helps. This iteration seems particularly full-featured. You might want to check it out for your own use.

aside: this pretty much sums it up

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

This post from a popular blog about everything NYC–and I would argue the comments even more so–pretty much sums up why we want to get out of here. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of great things about living here (like having a good job, opportunities, etc.), but c’mon, people.

Food and the environment

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I can’t imagine this is all that different than Michael Pollen’s recent books (which he references), but NPR this morning had an interview with Mark Bittman on how changing your eating habits may indeed change the whole world.

Ever since I upgraded to WordPress 2.7, I haven’t been able to successfully upload pictures, using either the standard method or with my NextGen Gallery plugin. So, I’m sorry to say, after mucking around with updating databases etc., I’m back to running 2.6.5. But it is working! I may try to upgrade again – I fear the actual upgrade may have gone amiss the first time, but that might wait until the next year. If it ain’t broke…

aside: where do you do what you do?

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Seeing Little D’s post with a pic of his new monitoring situation gave me an idea: how ’bout we all do a post on our respective blogs with pics of where we spend our time working? Some of you have seen my office, or some pics. I’ve been to the elevator of one brother’s office building. I used to sit in Dad’s office waiting for a ride home from Woody Gov. I literally worked in the same office as Mom. But still, that was a long time ago! How ’bout some updates? We all spend a lot of time there… why not share that part of our lives? I’m writing this from one of my offices away from my office, so I’ll post when I get home. You?
