I barely remember the brief family visit to NYC years ago, but I remember it feeling very dirty. It probably was, and seemed even more so to a niave young Midwesterner. I know the metropolis has been cleaned up significantly since, but it still surprises me to see the lengths we go to keep appearances up; to make things look authentic, historic, natural (for a city). There are crazy examples of the same but different thing happening in other contexts, but to see such an effort to hide cell phone antennas, still makes me pause:

I wonder what kind of radiation those people on the top floor are getting.
