Plummeting!

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Much like the market, I noticed my page views for the ‘ole blog-a-rooney have fallen recently:

So, what better than a shameless post with a little picture gallery to gather some interest (ha!). ‘All the news’ indicates confidence is high, so let’s hope this isn’t a failed attempt! Ok, enough with the bad puns… here are some pics from a visit to the WBGO transmitter. Enjoy!

By the way, as I write I’m listening to some music from the Village Vanguard we recorded a bit ago. Upcoming this week we’ve got another broadcast, featuring the very-talented (and kinda cute – I can say that ’cause Adrienne’s out of town, right? 🙂 ) Anat Cohen. Hope you check it out. That plus two other live remote broadcasts plus a programming special will make for a very busy week!

Short tour of Adrienne’s new work digs

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Adrienne’s been at the new gig a couple weeks now, and tonight on the way to dinner we had time for a short tour. Here’s a pic out of one of the windows on her 34th-floor office that she shares:

Looking out the window

Her office is just a couple short blocks from Grand Central. A couple more pics of the insides after the jump. (more…)

I remember reading Adrienne’s bio on the KMUW website, when I was researching the job. She said she knew her hometown of Goldendale had hit the big time when it was mentioned on ATC – All Things Considered. If that’s the qualifier, than I suppose our home town, good ‘ole JC, has hit the big time now: we got our own story on Marketplace today!

Early morning light show

Friday, September 12th, 2008

WBGO’s pledge drive begins today. I had planned on getting up about 4:15, so I could catch a 5:07 train to get to ‘BGO by 5:30am. Of course, the cell phone rang at 3:35, with the other end (a WBGO employee) exclaiming, “all the computers are broken!”. I hop on the web at home… web server is up… email is up… I can remote in to other services… then the employees says, “oh hey, it works now”. If you’re reading this and sympathize in any way, but haven’t seen TheWebsiteIsDown.com yet, go watch it now.

Point being, I had a little extra time on the way to work, which gave me the opportunity to snap a couple pics of the Tribute in Light:

Seven years ago…

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

I was walking home Friday night when I turned the corner on my block and saw this:

A practice run for the annual Tribute in Light. I was still in college, working in the Large Ensemble Office when I first heard the news. All classes were cancelled for the rest of the day, but I do remember having to go home and get my Jazz Ensemble uniform, because we would still take pictures that day. It feels so long ago. I suppose it was.

Week in review super post

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

It’s been a busy week. Here are some details that are either worth mentioning, or I just happen to have a pic of!

Tuesday morning before work (I went in late, more below) I went to pic up my replacement bike (for the stolen one – my CC did cover me). They told me it was in, but they still had to assemble it. So I went and waited for 30 minutes in the nearby park. Saw a good opportunity for a HDR pic:

After a nice little leisurely sit on a bench, I went back to the store, only for them to tell me that they actually got the wrong bike delivered, and would have to get a new correct one delivered. They said they’d have it in 3 hours, but I couldn’t wait. I’d come back… more after the jump. (more…)

Free live music!

Josh\'s pic of VV sign

Here’s a chance to check out some live music in NYC, without leaving the comfort of your own computer desk. Guillermo Klein Y Los Guachos perform Wednesday night at 9pm Eastern on NPR.org/music (there’ll be a link starting 8pm Wednesday). I’m listening to their new release as I type this stuff. Great stuff – this is (small) big band music like you’ve not heard it before, I guarantee. To quote one reviewer: “…brass choirs, Cuban rhythm, fugue-like passages, talking, whistling, mechanical repetitions over a groove, and bits of aerated rock.” Hope you check it out-

Tour de Brooklyn megapost

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

As mentioned previously, today Adrienne and I did an 18-mile ride through Brooklyn. Though I figure by the time you add all the riding we did to get there, get to lunch afterwards, and get home, it was likely closer to a 25-mile day. Lots more pics after the jump. (more…)

Me setting up for the Village Vanguard

WBGO has started a monthly collaboration with NPR’s Music website to do a live broadcast from NYC’s Village Vanguard. For now, I get to the do the music mix in the coat closet. Which, despite it’s tight workspace, is preferable to where we’re going to have to set up when the weather turns cold – in the back storage room/musician hangout/hallway to the men’s bathroom.

Anyway, last night’s music was from Al Foster, who’d played drums with Miles Davis for years. Music, pictures, blogs and more from the night are all to be found here.
